Minnesota Memories of Olympians, Sports Heritage
Author Patrick "Packy" Mader is excited to be invited to share his passion for Minnesota sports, history, and geography with residents at The Rivers in Burnsville. His book, Minnesota Gold, features the stories, lives, challenges, perseverance, and achievements of 57 Minnesota athletes who competed on the world stage--primarily the Olympics. Several Dakota County athletes are highlighted including triple jumper Shani Marks of Apple Valley; and cross country skier Lindsay Williams of Hastings;and alpine ski racer Kristina Koznick of Burnsville (who started her career at Buck Hill), cross country skier Todd Boonstra of Burnsville, and runner Heather Dorniden of Rosemount (all scheduled for the second volume).
One runner profiled in the book, Don Timm, grew up in Burnsville and is a 1967 of Burnsville High School. Don was not recruited by any college, but was welcomed by Coach Roy Griak and walked-on at the University of Minnesota. Before Don graduated from college he was a Big 10 conference champion in steeplechase and an integral part of the cross country team that won conference. Don participated in the 1972 and 1976 Olympic Trials--and became an alternate on the team when he finished 4th in a very tight race in 1976. Many other Twin Cities athletes are highlighted in the book in a variety of sports and eras. Come learn about these remarkable athletes and how they have contributed to their sport and communities.
