Children's Books and Minnesota Olympians Presentations
Author Patrick "Packy" Mader is thrilled to be invited to New York Mills Elementary to share stories of rural life and Minnesota Olympians with the students and staff.
The program for grades K - 2 will include a component of agriculture education and celebrate rural lifestyle and traditions as demonstrated in Packy's four children picture books. He brings large storyboards and many props to engage and educate students.
The grade 3+ presentations will feature 57 of Minnesota's most remarkable athletes in his recently published book Minnesota Gold who have competed on the world stage and highlight their stories, lives, challenges, perseverance, and achievements. Among the athletes profiled are Lindsay Whalen of Hutchinson, now a star professional basketball player, who was a member of gold medal-winning Olympic teams in 2012 and 2016 and led the team in scoring in the gold medal game. Another well-known athlete in Minnesota Gold and a favorite of hockey fans in Buzz Schneider of Babbitt, a member of the Miracle on Ice team which surprised the sporting world by upsetting the Soviet Union and other European powerhouses. Curling, a popular sport in northern Minnesota, is featured with Bemidji athletes Kari Erickson and Stacey Liapis, sisters on the 2002 Olympic team. Jessie Diggins, a 2014 Olympian from the Stillwater area, will be seeking to become the first American woman to ever medal in Olympic cross country skiing history.
All of Packy's books are inspirational and have positive messages. They have lessons about sportsmanship and citizenship, two highly valued qualities in a person of any age.
Lindsay Whalen has been a member of two gold medal-winning Olympic basketball teams; Packy has written four children's books with a rural Minnesota setting; Buzz Schneider of Babbitt was a member of the 1980 Miracle on Ice gold medal team!
