MEET OPA & OMA

Yes, Opa and Oma are real people.  They are the parents of the author, Patrick “Packy” Mader and his six brothers and sisters.  Opa is a German word (a nickname) for grandfather and Oma is a German word (also a nickname) for grandmother.  Opa’s real name is George, and Oma’s actual name is Mary Margaret.  They grew up on farms near the small towns of Dedham and Willey, Iowa, in Carroll County.

Opa and Oma farmed in both Iowa and Minnesota.  At one time they had a very diverse farm with cows, pigs, and chickens.  It is still an operating farm, but it is now rented to another farm family.  They have several gardens and harvest lots of fresh produce.   Opa is also a skilled carpenter, and Oma is also a talented quilter and baker.  Many readers may have parents or grandparents that have led similar lives and have similar gifts.
